Want to learn multiplication & learn times tables the fun way?
You can do just that with Online Times Alive (which we get to review for you)! City Creek Press, Inc. has even created the Times Alive App for Apple users (ios 9.0 or higher). There is also a "Lite" version available. But fear not android users! You can join me in using it online!
Some important notes for parents & teachers:
To check your child's progress, you must log in to their account. You can check their progress, scores, times, and if they actually completed by checking online under their account. I see this as a pro and a con both. On one hand, it does make it easier to check-in while your student is already logged in so you can do what I like to call a "live check". However, that is also a con. I don't like the idea of not having a parent portal.
One reason I am happy to do this review with my kids is that their time tables isn't the best. When I was in school, I remember doing times tables under a timed limit like it was a competition against myself to "beat my last score!". However, with the way the math is taught now and days, this is not something that is done as much anymore. Which isn't good. The repetition is important for life skills, especially multiplication in my opinion.
Think about it. When you are grocery shopping and you have to figure out your bill and you have to buy 3 apple juices at 1.99 each, you can simply and quite automatically just use multiplication. I have found when I ask my kids the same questions, they try to add it sometimes instead. So knowing how to multiply is very important.
First, after you sign up (FREE sign up, code is below!), you will see this window.
NOTE that you have to click "Online Times Alive Go Now" blue button as you see below. I so slipped into natural habit and was looking for the side bar link instead of going to the big blue button. Ha ha. I clearly had a mum moment.
TIPS:
1. Make sure your Adobe Flash isn't blocked and is updated!
2. They say that this is better on Chrome or Firefox (especially if on a Mac/Apple computer).
3. Use your own computer and use the same computer consistently.
4. Create an easy log in for your child(ren) that they can remember and so can you so it's easier to check into the right account and check into the progress of your student(s).
When you start, it has a little bit of a cheesy quality to it. My older kids were joking that they were
"concerned" in a funny voice because the voice that was talking was so monotone and robotic. Ha ha.
I am personally curious what will happen when adobe is no longer support flash. I am sure they will think of something but that had me wondering for future access online.
When I was looking at creating separate accounts, I had to just go ahead and start the program as if already logged in to create the account-- which was a little confusing since you can only access the progress through logging in and I have multiple accounts for my kids.
When they are in, I really like that they mix the learning with different types of learning since all kids learn differently. For example, they may have a colouring activity at one point and then do the quick time test, which I will go over a little bit more in a bit, or they will have a short cut to teach kids how to remember the times tables. For example, with the times 2 tables, they teach that you can count on each hand by 2's and by the time you get to a number like 14, you can see what the two times table is. Meaning you would have 7 fingers up so since you were counting by 2's and you counted up to 14, that means that 7x2=14. Of course, you can use that skill for any number. But still useful and helpful. Especially for kinetic learners.
Now, onto the time tables timed tests. I actually really like them because there is value in teaching kids not only the repetitive skills to be able to do an easy recall but it's also important to have it timed because it not only encourages them to beat their time but also gets them to understand the importance of doing it quickly and correctly so it's natural habit to them.
When your child is done doing it, I really like that they can exit and it takes them back to the same page and it's easier to transfer to another student/student's account.
The buttons on the program itself are super intuitive and helpful. You can easily tell (at the bottom) how a student or parent can check student progress. Or you can exit out. Or you can review. Whatever it is that you need to do, is there.
This makes it easily accessible to not only parents but to students to be able to take more control of the lessons and to be able to learn to navigate an internet/app program by themselves.
For example, this is ideal for a school child who is a latch key kid for example and doesn't need their parent to be over them to get into their program.
But moreover, it's good for all kids to be able to do whether they are doing as an after school enhancement or like me, and are doing it as supplementary to a curriculum done at home.
I highly recommend this program to others. I saw an improvement in my child very quickly.
