This is a book that I will be giving my children for Christmas Eve. In fact, Hanukkah starts tonight so it will be an ironic Hanukkah present or a Christmas eve present. Since Nana Pat and Papa David are here, we can all gather together and read after we play dreidel. I should also have prefaced this with we are not religiously Jewish but since we have some Jewish blood, it just seems right to celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas. They just happened to be on the same night.
These are short stories-- as in 20 pages or less. I like this very much because it is something that you can read to the kids for bedtime. I don't remember the last time I read to them for bed. It is mainly because they will bring a chapter book and, no joke, expect me to read the entire book to them. This is humanly not possible.
The stories shared in the book are:
Brother Robber by Helen Christaller
Three Young Kings by George Sumner Albee
Transfiguration by Madeleine L'Engle
The Cribmaker's Trip to Heaven by Reimmichl
The Guest by Nokali S Lesskov
Christmas Day in the Morning by Pearl S Buck
The Other Wise Man by Henry can Dyke
The Miraculous Staircase by Arthur Gordon
No Room in the Inn by Katherine Paterson
The Chess Keeper by Ger Koopman
The Christmas Lie by Dorothy Thomas
The Riders of St Nicholas by Jack Schaefer
Grandfather's Stories by Ernst Wiechert
The Vexation of Barney Hatch by BJ Chute
The Empty Cup by Opal Menius
The Well of the Star by Elizabeth Godge
A Certain Small Shepherd by Rebecca Caudill
The Carpenter's Christmas by Peter K Rosegger
What the Kings Brought by Ruth Sawyer
The Christmas Rose by Selma Lagerlof
This has to be one of my new favourite Christmas books because it is meant to be something you can share around the family and do short readings. Remember in the old Christmas movies how they did that? Would that be cool to be able to again?
