Big potential is a book that I think transcends those just wanting you to make personal changes in their lives. In reading just the first two chapters you see that there is much to be learned both by parents teachers School administrators professional walkers and even, dare I say it, a congress.
In a day and age where we focus so much on individual achievement and test scores and what we are capable on an individual level, we have forgotten that much of our success is determined by the people around us. And I'm not talking about your friendships and how they work. And this is not about your friendships being about the key to hold the determination of your success either.
This is about being able to be a support to each other emotionally mentally physically and spiritually as well as giving a helping hand. And even more powerful to give me a helping hand to someone you don't know.
You can tell that a lot of research went into this book but also that thoughtfulness went into this book as well.
He tells some great stories with great jokes to go with his we start stories and ideas. This makes reading it as a way of getting to know him as well as his insights which is a great part of learning what he is trying to say.
This is a book that I can see myself running more than once to be able to realign myself with something I do hold if I dear to me and that is that Community is key to unlocking potential.
In reading this book, it makes me want to go back and read his first book about happiness. The idea that we can be happy and thrive and do so in a community is something we have long past long in pursuit for perfected achievement.
I definitely will be reading this book over and over and even encouraging my kids to read it! Also, it will go on the top of my shelf of my favourite reads!
I give this book ☀☀☀☀☀ out of 5!
Book Description:
"Bestselling author Shawn Achor shows how to unlock hidden sources of potential in ourselves and others.
In a world that thrives on competition and individual achievement, we are measuring and pursuing potential all wrong. By pursuing success in isolation - pushing others away as we push ourselves too hard - we are not just limiting our potential, we are becoming more stressed and disconnected than ever.
In his highly anticipated follow-up to The Happiness Advantage, Achor reveals a better approach. Drawing on his work in 50 countries, he shows that success and happiness are not competitive sports. Rather, they depend almost entirely on how well we connect with, relate to, and learn from each other.
Just as happiness is contagious, every dimension of human potential - performance, intelligence, creativity, leadership ability and health - is influenced by those around us. So when we help others become better, we reach new levels of potential, as well. Rather than fighting over scraps of the pie, we can expand the pie instead.
Small Potential is the limited success we can attain alone. BIG Potential is what we can achieve together. Here, Achor offers five strategies - the SEEDS of Big Potential--for lifting the ceiling on what we can achieve while returning happiness and meaning to our lives.
The dramatic shifts in how we approach work today demand an equally dramatic shift in our approach to success. Big Potential offers a new path to thriving in the modern world."
