Home School Navigator

We are getting to review Home School Navigator Reading and Language Arts Curriculum which includes interactive notebooks for the older students by Home School Navigator

When logging in, it doesn't have a separate login for students. Which is something I would have preferred to have in terms of easy usability. I should not have to log into my teacher account and then I have to log her in with her own log in a key. It's two different steps and passwords for each student for them to get to their lessons instead of their username being something that can work the same as mine but just log into their student account separately.

Also, in going by grade level, she was at Level Blue. I believe she may feel the same way I do, but her reading level far exceeds what their expectations of fourth graders for reading out loud section. While this isn't that big of an issue it can be something that she finds annoying. However, the practice can also do her some good so there is a benefit. It helps build other skills that they need for educational benchmarks. Ie: How to be able to speak publically.

Finding the part of the lessons where they had the interactive books and the reading was not easy to find because it was under Independent Reading. Which to me signaled that she was to read like we did Free Reading time when we were kids. So that, I think needs to be renamed. Also, the link to the teachers' guide or the kids' worksheets or instructions should be labelled as such underneath the section for Independent Reading and not just the title of the book with minimal words. The less confusion the better.

Things I LOVED about this was that it was cool to see them do their vocabulary words by roots of words rather than just a random set of words. This is important because as kids grow older, and eventually need to take SAT and ACT for college while they are in high school, they are going to need to know root words and how to break down words to find the root words. This is an incredibly crucial skill and such a great asset to the program that they did think about this.

I think some of the lessons are too easy for kids and that could be just because my kids could blow through books like crazy. So what would take your kid a week to read would take mine a day? No joke. So it's important to include more questions for advanced readers or more book options. The alternative is true with kids that struggle as well. Working ahead is great too or working behind is great as well but something to think about within the realms of the current curriculum.

I wish the worksheets were fillable so you can print or fill it in and save it or then print it. My daughter likes to do things online so it makes it much easier.

Via's Review:

Homeschool Navigator is what I am reviewing today and I am reviewing this later than I normally would be so I am sorry if it is worse quality then when I do it earlier in the day but without further ado let's get into it! I think the first thing is that they expect you to have a printer which is really hard on people that don't have printers so they should show an alternative to a printer in the intro video. The first interesting thing I tried was The Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs but it was lame. I knew easily how to eddo it an that was what I did for that. The site is organised but not understandable. I felt it was too easy for me as well for where my reading level was.
