Preach to Yourself---- or the Wall?

I have to be honest-- I was looking forward to reading this book, and reviewing it. Preach to Yourself. Sounds so much like a self help book that will have you hooked on how you can change your life, through means of both this world and the spiritual one, doesn't it? Especially given other quick reviews I had seen, I was actually very excited about reading this book.

Well, I have to be honest, I wish I could take a highlighter, pen, and the backspace and copy and paste buttons on the computer to this book. While it is not a horrible read, it is not what you think it can be for you. That is, unless you like books that focus on writing the book in such a way that within the first few chapters you feel like problems that are brought up are not answered until more the end of the book and using the bible as a crutch. Now let me make clear, it having biblical references and such do not bother me so much as using it as a base so much that you aren't getting a clear picture of intention and understanding. Or I just need more coffee...

Some of the references and back up (using the bible) made absolutely zero sense to me while other parts were done very wisely with gems of wisdom.

The way this is written, is just contradictory to the title and what it promises in my honest opinion-- especially in the beginning of the book. But it could be how I am reading it.

I don't feel this book really starts to live up to what it's trying to do until the middle of the book-- which is like page 85, which isn't conducive to keeping readers engaged-- especially those that I believe the writer is trying to reach and especially those that struggle in their faith.

However, when you get to the middle of the book, there is some good solid stuff. Some great food for thought and some very insightful pieces.

Overall, though, because of the way I read it and how it is written, I am going to have to give this a 2 out of 5.

Book Description

"Break the cycle of doubting yourself, take God at His word, and talk back with truth - a new message of freedom from bestselling coauthor of Wild and Free Hayley Morgan.
We know Christ came to speak life, but then how come our inner critic keeps showing up and stealing the mic? If we’re honest, she’s a harsh one, saying things we’d never dream of saying to others: You’ll never measure up, you’ll fail again tomorrow, you just can’t get it right.
It has been said that the eighteen inches from head to heart is the soul’s longest journey. Our head knows the good news is true, but our heart struggles to believe it, and it is in this gap that we battle to believe the promises of God.
Hayley Morgan, coauthor of bestselling book Wild and Free, has wrestled with this tension her whole life. In Preach to Yourself, she tackles it head-on to discover how we can renew our minds to renew our lives. For every woman who struggles with repetitive, negative self-talk, this book will show you how to identify the toxic loops where you get stuck and replace them with the truth of God we can believe with our whole selves.
This is not a “try harder” reprimand, it’s a “believe better” invitation: to take God at His word when He tells you who you are. Come along and learn a simple practice to break free from the lies holding you back, and step forward into the fullness of life God has planned."
