Hake Grammar & Writing for 3rd Graders

We get to review  Hake/Saxon Grammar and Writing 3 by Hake Publishing. As you can guess, it being the #3, is that it is meant for 3 graders.

What I found is that for my kids is that it would challenge my child going into 2nd but was way too easy for my child who is in 4th grade. While at the same token, things not covered before for the 4th grader would be enhanced and brightened by this.

The student workbook is meant to be worked on by one student-- so if you have two students or more, you will need to get workbooks for each individual student. There is also the teacher handbook that I really appreciate is separate.

The Grammar and Writing are totally separate as well which I REALLY appreciate because they are so important.

For the grammar book, I  actually really appreciate that the teacher set and the students that are totally separate.  The reason for this being is because some books that are meant for homeschooling will try to compound the answer keys with the student book and I feel like that's counterproductive.

Given the fact that there are over a hundred lessons in this book, you know that there's going to be a lot that they cover but what you may not realize is exactly how much they cover and there's a lot of things that they cover. No two lessons are similar or alike; which is great but I also feel that it would be nice to have a separate practice workbook so they can include those extra worksheets for each lesson so that way they can actually practice the things that they've learned. Some kids pick it up right away in which they wouldn't need the practice for that particular lesson but I think that a lot of students need the extra practice in between learning lessons for continuity. For example, if they were learning about proper nouns and learning about singular nouns, they should practice the skills more than once.  So one worksheet isn't quite enough to get it but at the same time, it is a very comprehensive workbook set that in terms of quality I have not seen you in a very long time.

This is a lesson that even though my first grader is advanced in the lessons that he's doing for most homeschool curriculum sets, this still is enough to keep him challenged in what he's doing. So that is speaking more volumes than people realize because my kids generally are doing work that is considered already are 3rd-grade level when they're in first or second grade based on the curriculum that they use overall.

I also would critique the fact that the tests are in the teacher handbook and they're actually oddly enough put behind the answer keys.  So you actually have to tear out the test to give it to them and I personally would like to see a separate workbook that is just for the test alone.  And there are multiple reasons for this. For one, is the ease for the students and for the parent in using it. Also, when and if you have to do a student review with your state on what they have learned instead of taking in the entire book or having to keep the test as a separate portfolio you literally could just hand over the test workbook to show the test and understanding of each individual unit and you don't have to worry about as much nitty-gritty work.

I also think that in the student handbook they have extra worksheets in the back or little activities that you can add on to a lesson which is absolutely great. However, I wish it was attached to the lesson itself rather than being in the back of the book because it's easy to skip to the next page if you need to and it's not for every lesson that they have these extra worksheets so it would not be that big of an issue and it just makes the ease of using the material much better.

In terms of the quality of the education in this book I would definitely give it one of my top ratings for this year because I feel like any kid can come in at any level and learn something and be able to better their skills which speaks volumes because not every curriculum out there, especially for Grammar and Writing, is set up that way.

This is a curriculum that you can use all your long so you only have to get the materials once.

I also appreciate that the look and the feel of the book are nice and it is already pre-punched so you can put it in a three-ring binder easily.

I would definitely say that I'm going to recommend this to homeschooling families that I know and I have quite a few people asking me what I do for homeschooling and I will definitely be sharing this resource to them.
