I wanted to really like this book but the minute you throw out the issues that are related to mental health as just "pray it away", it loses credibility. This book looked like a good one to review because it is about overcoming... and needless to say that I have overcome a lot in my own life. Now I have to overcome a few more things. But I can say, I won't be using this book to do that.
When looking a the table of contents, you wonder what exactly you will be reading. I know, for example, that Chapter 8 & 9 may be more difficult for me to read because when reading self-help books like these, I tend to steer from overly religious books. So we will see how it goes.
Contents:
Chapter 1: Overcomer
Chapter 2: Overcoming Weakness with Strength
Chapter 3: Overcoming Falsehood with Truth
Chapter 4: Overcoming Evil with Good
Chapter 5: Overcoming Anxiety with Peace
Chapter 6: Overcoming Fear with Faith
Chapter 7: Overcoming Confusion with Wisdom
Chapter 8: Overcoming Temptation with Scripture
Chapter 9: Overcoming Everything with Prayer
Chapter 10: Overcoming Death with Life
Likes:
* Hardcover
* When looking at the chapters, seems like you can skip to the right chapter about whatever you need to overcome in your own life personally.
* It is well written
* Addresses the identifier pretty well.
Dislikes:
* The purely biblically reasoning of what a cure is
* The fact the there are less facts about how to address the thing that needs fixing, though it has no problem identifying what needs to be fixed
* It loses a ton of credibility to me because of the lack of facts beyond what serves the message he is trying to say
* It also losses a lot of credibility to me because of the lack of facts backing up what he is saying about religiously based cures
I am not even going to lie-- I REALLY wanted to like this book and I just DON'T. I would not recommend this book as it doesn't really address what is going on beyond just religious based answers. HOWEVER, for those that are more religiously driven, and I have very good friends who are, they may really like this book.
WOW. I RARELY give low stars. But this book imho opinion is a danger to the real issues of mental health by trying to gloss over real big issues with just "pray it away" theory which is crap. FOR THIS reason alone, it gets one star from me.
Book Description
We live in a time of deep uncertainty. And yet, the Bible promises we were created to enjoy lives of freedom, even in times when the world around us seems filled with darkness. We were created to be overcomers, conquering the greatest obstacles in our lives.
In his new book, Overcomer, beloved teacher David Jeremiah offers his insights on one of the most quoted but least understood passages of the Bible: the apostle Paul’s admonition to the Ephesians to take up the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18). With his signature depth, wisdom, and compassion, Dr. Jeremiah explores the powerful relevance of spiritual armor as a critical tool each day as we confront the specific challenges in our lives and of our time.
If you’ve had enough of living in defeat, it is time to find renewed strength and claim the promises of God’s Word to overcome life’s greatest threats.
